PostSubject: Pellet Bedding   Thu Jan 31, 2008 3:07 am

I use a pine pellet bedding called Equine Pine, available at Tractor Supply stores. A friend uses the same bedding under the name of Woody Pet. The pellets break down when water is sprinkled on them, forming a very absorbant sawdust that lasts for a month or two, depending on the amount of usage.

Prior to using Equine Pine, I used Aspen shavings. The urine went through to the linoleum bottom of the cage, staining it a great deal. Although I bleached the cage base every time I changed the bedding, the stains never came out.

Last night I took the used Equine Pine out of the cage, as it had been two months, and I wanted to use the rest of the Aspen I had, so I could get it out of the room and make room for something else. When I took the equine Pine out, the linoleum undernieth was no longer stained. Apparently the pine pellets dried the stain matter enough to remove it completely, or bleached it out somehow. The linoleum base looks new again, and while I knew it was clean and sanitary, it definitely wasn't clean.

I thought I'd pass this on, as it's a side effect of the Equine Pine I didn't know about, and I don't think my friend did, either.

I would give it a try with the pellet bedding.

I have used them and they work like wonder for gps where the hay would be since that is where they spend most of their time at. Yeah if you wait a month or so, and clean it. Better open some windows until you get the bag tied up. lol

I agree, I don't like aspen at all much but it is good for gps. I used the woody pet in their hay bin area as a litter pan, ontop of fleece so it is easy to sweep up the woody saw dust.

I use woody pet for my longhaired cavies, as it lasts a good while and doesn't tangle in their hair. On all my other cages I use kiln-dried pine shavings with woody pet underneath in the pee and water bottle corners. It works great! The only downside I've noticed is that it's heavy. Other than that, I think I can get a 30 lb bag from the feed store for around $6. Works great, and easy on the wallet Wink
