PostSubject: Moss   Sat Jan 12, 2008 6:51 am

My parakeet Moss may have fertile eggs! I'm so excited!
I wanted Azul & Lief (my other keets) to mate and have babies but when it became clear that Azul & Lief weren't gonna breed I took out the nest box and put their friends Cloud & Moss in wth them again. Then a few days ago I realized Moss had layed 3 eggs (now 4) in a coffee creamer box I had in their cage cuz they like to play in it. The only male in the cage with her is Lief but I never thought he'd mate anyone except Azul since they seem to be very close and him and Moss never have been. Well I dunno if they are fertile but she's been laying on them since I think Jan 5th. And she's hoarding nesting supplies too. But Lief isn't laying on them with her or anything lik he should be. I thought I saw him in the nest box once or twice though.

So if they are fertile and they hatch I'll prolly have to raise them myself cuz I doubt Moss could alone. I'd like the excuse to rasise them anyway Razz
I've researched on breeding and raising baby birds so i know what to do.
I hope I'm not getting my hopes up tho Sad

So has anyone else here had any experience with baby birds or eggs? Is there anyway to tell if theyre fertile besides candling? I don;t want to candle cuz I'm scared I'll upset Moss as she's very protective of them. Besides I'm horrible at candling. I've tryed candling duck eggs before with no luck.

Well, in my parent's house they have 2 little birds I don't know what are they called, but they are really small. The female has layed eggs like 3 times already DON'T TOUCH THE EGGS, because they will eat the eggs if you touch it at least that's what my sister's bird did. Other than that NO experience at all Smile

Yeah, I didn't want to touch the eggs anyway since you're not supposed to move them bc the embryo will get shook up.

Sometimes birds eat their eggs for nutrition so your sisters bird may have done that.

I thought I'd update and tell about Moss' kids.
In Jan she had 5 babies hatch but unfortnately I didnt take Cloud out and she killed 3 babies Sad. I then separated her rite away and the other 2 babies were fine. One is green, gray, & yellow (Draco) and the other is lutino (Linus).
Then She had a 2nd clutch and had 3 lutinos and a blue and gray. The blue is Soren and as soon as I can sex them and tell them apart I'll name the lutinos.
Now she's had a 3rd clutch of 5 eggs (including a parakeet egg at a petshop that i took since the employees were gonna throw it away). I really hope they all 5 hatch since this will be the last time I will be able to breed parakeets (I've got too many). But they may not all hatch bc I didnt have another cage yet for the 4 keets from her last clutch so they had to stay in and they got in the nest occasinaly and pooped on the eggs and rolled them about Sad.

Wow! congratulations nd sorry for your loss. I hope everything goes right, although I have no knowledge about birds Smile. My mom has 4 parakeets in her balcony its 2 pairs of them. They are nice and loud but I don't have any interest in birds Smile. Have you gotten any piggies yet? or no space for them lol ?

No, not yet. I have to have wood floor put into my bedroom first (the ducks ruined teh carpet) and then I can get cavies. Shame I have to get the floor 1st tho since I've seen so many cute cavies at pet shops lately.
